Old and slow

If you're a marathoner, especially if you're either "of a certain age" or a slower runner/walker, you'll probably relate to my posts. I've completed all the states, my total is over 80, and I've even collected a few age group awards along the way. But I'm always in the last 10% of finishers, thus my view is always from the back of the pack.

Hyponatremia back again! Ugh!

Maybe it was because I explained my past troubles with hyponatremia the night before the race, but I was hit once again with this condition.  During the last few miles of the Boy's Ranch Marathon in Live Oak, FL, I knew I was in trouble and took more electrolyte capsules.  I also tried more gels, but the last one just wouldn't go down.  I felt as if I needed both salt and sugar.  I was reduced to walking only.  After I finished, I tried so hard to celebrate the 50th marathon of fellow marathoner Mellody Hughes, but just couldn't think of eating cake.  After a few minutes, I had to lie down.  I went to my car and reclined the seat.

I sort of dozed for a few minutes until the race director came over to see about me.  When I raised up, I knew what was next.  At least I had time to warn her to move away before I threw up. Of course, this made me feel better.  After a few more minutes of resting and more water, I felt all right to drive.  I went straight to the nearest store and bought salt & vinegar potato chips.  A couple of miles later, I pulled into a rest area where I nibbled on the chips, drank more water, and eventually slept for about a half hour.

When I woke up I felt fine and was able to drive home (about 3 hours).

Since then, I've had a light cold and cough that just won't go away completely, which is making me feel fatigued.  So it's hard to get excited about another race right away.  Nevertheless, I'm doing Garden Spot in PA two weeks from yesterday.  Then the Potomac River Run on May 5, the Delaware Marathon on May 12, and Fargo, ND, on May 18.  Three in quick succession.

Then I'll need to find something in June.  I need at least one a month or I might have to actually--TRAIN!  Egads!
